I was bound and determined to remain true to the vision of the cover's artist, Ed Richardson, who passed away some years ago. Ed told me he could not conceive any concrete way to depict the Holocaust, in all its horror. Ed settled on abstract illustrations of broken glass, smoldering embers, iron bars, and in the sky, glass shards that might also be wings, a hint of humanity's redemption.
But such an abstract cover did not convey the subject matter to enough readers, and sales have suffered. So I hired artists to swap out some elements that didn't change Ed's original vision. They also kept the cover's focus on illustrations rather than photographs, coming up with a minimalist depiction of a Jewish family and a barbed wire fence.
